Photos from our trip to Texas this week. Guppy had a lot of fun with dogs, drinking chocolate milk, and was so tired by the time we got to the airport! We had a much better experience in the airports and on Delta this time! CAK was awesome, as usual. Now I really appreciate their play area! What a great place to pass some time when you are stuck in an airport on layovers or waiting. If it was enclosed, like a room, it would be the best, so the kiddos couldn't run out. You just have to appreciate the kid friendliness of CAK. Atlanta airport is a different story, though. Hustle and bustle and people everywhere, and no place to relax with a kid. They could take some of the PR help from CAK!

We had a Pampered Chef party with Jonette and the gang yesterday. Guppy had a little meltdown over some Legos, so he missed his afternoon nap. The pic is from after I got him out of the crib, and he was having a conversation with Tipsy, who was lying on the couch. I thought it was kind of a cool pic. Tipsy and Guppy are both dark in front of the curtains.

My Blog-Worthy Day... So Far.

I thought today has been unique enough to warrant a blog posting.

Guppy was still fast asleep when I went in to wake him this morning, so I took him to Lisa's house in his jammies, with his blanket firmly in his grasp. After that, I got on the highway, and there was some traffic. I got behind a beige Toyota, and got into the flow of traffic, going about 65. I'm about 4 car-lengths behind her when suddenly, she JAMS on her brakes, down to about 20, VERY FAST. Thankfully, I managed to slow down and not hit her, but I looked in my rear-view mirror and was almost creamed by the car behind me. We sped back up, and then she proceeded to do it again, TWICE!!! I couldn't get around her because the flow of traffic was pretty quick, and I couldn't see what what ahead of her causing her to almost demolish everyone on the highway.

So, I was already on red alert when I was almost to Akron U, and suddenly, this tractor trailer is backing up and just veers out into the road in front of me. I swerve into the other lane to miss him, swearing profusely. Then I get to campus, and there are students just wandering around in the road like they are all high on crack or something (it was 7:45 in the morning). And they all have on an ipod, so it's not like they are aware of their impending doom.

I get up to the lab, still a little worked up, and we don't have enough supplies for the lab today. So, I'm mixing chemicals, but I can't find my safety glasses. And this is the one lab that uses caustic chemicals. Oh well, It's not like I'm worried about my eyes anyways....

Then my TA comes into my office and starts drawing something on my whiteboard. I look at him, and he has this look on his face, and he says, "Uh oh. That was a permanent marker." WTF? He chooses this day to draw on my board with a permanent marker??? Arg. Thankfully it came off with alcohol.

So I went back in to check my toxic chemicals, and picked it up with a hot glove off the 325 degree bunsen burner, and drop it. I have freaking agar all over the supply room. And for those of you that don't know, agar is like jello, but a little stickier. So there is sticky nasty stuff among all the cords and beakers, and all my lab stuff. Double Arg.

So then I go to make some frozen burritos because I am starving. I put two in the microwave, and heat them for 2:30. After that, they are nuclear hot on the ends and still frozen in the middle. So I heat them 30 more seconds, and now they are like lava. You can't win with frozen burritos. They are either ice or complete fire.

So, now I'm headed to the gym with Steph, and I fully expect to break my foot or something. I'll let you know what happens.

My janitor, Sterling, was telling me this story this morning. You can't make this stuff up.

So, he gets here to UA at 5 in the morning. He starts cleaning on the 4th floor, and works his way down. He said he opened the men's bathroom door, and about puked. The smell of fish was so strong, he had to take a few minutes, and compose himself. He went in, and looked in the trash. Someone had thrown several cans of eaten salmon in the can.

Now apparently, this has happened multiple times this semester. In different restrooms, on different floors.

One of the Teaching Assistants, Rex, told me that he had caught this guy in the restroom before, here on the second floor. This man sits on the toilet, doing his business, and eats salmon. He also keeps a jug of water with him. Just so happened this guy ate the salmon on Friday, and then left it to smell over the weekend.

So, is this some new detox diet I don't know about? Two cans of salmon, a gallon of water, and sit on the potty?

(The only reason I share this story is because the smell of fish makes me vomit. And everyone knows it. That's why my janitor was taunting me with the story.)

I have had such a fight this morning!

I goofed and sent a check I was supposed to send to Time Warner to MY home address instead of their address. I called customer service to see what I should do. They gave me this BFD about sending the check to the check issuer and being charged a $25 fee and then me sending a new check from my account and it would take a month to credit the amount back.

I began to get a little steamed, and thought the rep didn't really know what he was talking about. He kept putting me on hold and asking someone questions and it seemed very unorganized.

I finally called BS on this guy and said I would try another route, then hung up.

I called the customer service number on the check, and they said, "Its a valid check. Just put it in an envelope and mail it to Time Warner." Easy Peasy!

I guess you always have to question people, especially when customer service doesn't really sound like service.

There are certain people that are good at their jobs. Those people have two choices, either do their jobs with a smile and a kind heart, or make everyone miserable. I ran into both kinds of people on my trip to Eagle Pass this week.
On the second flight back, from Atlanta to Akron, Guppy and I were flying Delta. We had already flown three times, twice on US Airways, once on Delta – each time with mixed results. One US Airways flight was great, with a very helpful flight attendant, and the other stank, with some grouchy old flight-hag. At no point was Guppy ever bad on any of the flights, even when he was projectile vomiting in his car seat. So, on the way back, our first Delta flight was OK, and then we got to the second flight.
It made me wonder why someone like this would even work in a customer-oriented job? She obviously hated her job, and she was really hating me. When you are boarding the plane, they allow people who have disabilities or small children to board first. So, I’m one of the first ones in line. I have a huge stroller, car seat, diaper bag, cooler with formula, and a backpack. I know it’s too much to carry myself, so on all the other flights (as was recommended online) I begged for help. You know, it kind of makes sense that the flight attendant would WANT to help you, seeing as how you can hold up the ENTIRE plane….
So, I got all my stuff to the door of the plane, and I could see her leaning up against the soda cart, waiting for the passengers to get to the plane. I smiled at her, and said, “Hi, could you help me?” and she looked at me as if I had lost my friggin mind. If she could have spit on me, she probably would have, but she rolled her eyes and said, “I can’t get off the plane.” Well, I have 40 people behind me that would have probably wanted Delta Dorkess to get off her lazy butt and help me. So I asked her (still politely), “Well, what do we do then?” She said, “I dunno.” And continued her staring down of me and Guppy, not even moving.
At that point the PILOT got off the plane to help me with the stroller, the carseat, and all the bags. Bless him, but I sure hope we did not interrupt his SAFETY CHECKS! Hmmm, pilot or stewardess help passengers, who knew?
So, I get in the seat, and Delta had put us in 1C and 1D, which are those front seats in the plane with no tray table or place to put your stuff. I asked if I could have another seat, but was told “NO. We’re full.” Arg, I’m not arguing with this utter lack of a woman. So I precariously perched my child into this seat, and placed the diaper bag and the formula cooler on the floor, behind my feet. At that second, this woman told me, “You have to put everything in the overhead bins. Nothing goes on the floor, Love.” Did this hose-beast just call me LOVE? Oh no she didn’t. Its on.
I didn’t get up to put them in my overhead bin. There was no room at that point, because the plane was full. I just put on my seatbelt, and looked at Guppy. So, she comes back over and says, “You are goin to have to put those up.” And I reply, “There isn’t anywhere to put them, and I need access to them for the flight.” And she says, “They have to go up.” So, I handed her the diaper bag, and she looked at me like I was handing her a steaming ball of elephant shit, covered in beetles. She pushed it back at me and said, “You’ll have to make room.” And I said, still seated, “I can’t, and the formula has to remain upright, because otherwise it will spill all over your plane, and then my baby will have nothing to drink, and he will scream the whole flight.”
She took the bag from me, and started shoving it in the overhead bin. I was still somewhat in shock that this Delta Dingleberry was being so nasty to me, that I just kind of watched while she was shoving the formula bag. I decided not to get up at that point and start fighting with her, only out of the fact that I had Guppy with me, and we couldn’t afford to get kicked off the plane, or tazed, or whatever they do to unruly passengers. Guppy and I just sat back, and as soon as the plane took off he fell asleep, and I got the formula out of the overhead bin. This woman then proceeded to ran my with her large hips every time she passed by.
Well, we got off the plane, and headed for the rest room at CAK. The bathroom was empty, except for a janitor lady mopping the floors. I laid the Gupper down on the changing table (which was marble, by the way. Who makes a marble changing table?) and started taking his diaper off. I told him “Ew! You’re stinky!” and the janitor lady came over and handed me a trash bag. She said, “I was just going to start getting the trash, so if you want to put the diaper in there, I’ll put the other trash over it so it doesn’t stink.” This lady was so nice. Her and I chatted about how hard it was to travel alone with a baby, how she liked kids, and how much she liked her job. She was such a pleasant change from what I had just experienced.
Some people are happy with their jobs, no matter what they do, and some people are just nasty. It’s a shame that I could write so much about this rude lade, and not as much about how nice the janitor was to me. But its funny how customer service works. It left a sour memory for Delta in my head, but a really nice on for the Akron Canton Airport.

A lot of things have been making me think lately. Last night, my friend Steph made a comment about how everyone was amazed that I took Guppy in stride. I didn't seem nervous or jittery, I didn't lose it when he cried non-stop for several months with colic, I don't chase him around and worry...
I think that part of it is that I am amazed that I made it this far. Every time he cries, I think , "Man, this would be a lot worse if he was crying and I was blind." Or if I needed to run out for some food and couldn't let him hang out with my dad because I had no one on the Mexican border. Or if I died during childbirth, and my family was so sad at wanting to be with him, but he was in Texas...
I think that life has taken an amazing turn, and I can't help but KNOW there is a higher power in all this. How else do you go from being stuck, to having such a perfect life? Well, except for the snow. Screw snow! I have a beautiful house, a perfectly healthy and happy child, a great babysitter, a flexible and fulfilling job, an opportunity to get my PhD, great friends, a great grandma and grandpa for Gupper, and I can see. Wow, being alive at this point really rocks.
I'm really grateful. I have a different perspective than a lot of people, but that is who I am.

Dressing a Squirming Child

Let me tell you how difficult it is to dress this kid! He used to just lay there and smile as I changed his diapers. Then, he realized, "There's something down there, and it's fun to yank on it!" So, every diaper change was me moving a roving hand. Which is especially nasty when "number 2" is involved, because that roving hand tends to be covered in it! Then, of course, the hand has to somehow touch me, so it ends up involving an outfit change for two people.

And, if you are like my mom, you allow the little firehose to remain open to the air a little two long, and end up getting sprayed. I have the routine down to really really fast, but she just takes a tad too long adoring his cuteness and BAM! One day, he managed to pee all over her, the open container of diaper wipes, ten diapers, and his Christmas outfit that was sitting on the counter. It was quite a feat!

He has been trying to flip over while getting changed. If you aren't watching, a half naked from the waist down baby will be taking off away from you, just dangling away - happy as a clam.

I'm having kind of a rough day.....

So, this morning Guppy threw up everywhere in his crib, and he was covered with puke when I went to get him. I had to give him an unscheduled bath, so that made me late leaving.

When I got to the babysitters, there was this lady there, talking and talking and I had to basically push her out of my way to sit down and take off Guppy's coat. I interrupted her to tell Lisa that Guppy threw up, and I only gave him toast for breakfast, and then pushy Nurse lady proceeded to start to tell me her entire theory of puke. I pushed past her to get out.

So, I got to school, and there were no spots. I drove all the way to the top of the Exchange deck, and decided to just park on the top and risk a ticket. So I open my car door to get out of my car, and proceed to slip on the ice and fall on my face. Thank God I wasn't holding my coffee.

So, I forgot my phone in my car in the whole process. I realized it as I was walking in the door to Schrank. I decided not to turn around, just to take all my stuff up to my office and go at noon. And maybe move my car if I don't have a ticket.

I'm kind of having a rough day....

I think finding a good daycare for Guppy has been one of the biggest blessings. I even bought a house close to his babysitter, so I wouldn't have to look for a different one. I think when you find a good babysitter, you should do everything in your power to keep them happy. Kind of like a girlfriend :)

Well, when I was dropping Guppy off the other day, something most annoying happened. The babysitter has the kids at her house. You have to walk in her front door and down the hall to drop the kiddos off or pick them up. So, this lady was in front of me. She stopped right in the middle of the hall when I was dropping Guppy off. Couple of issues I have with this are 1. It's cold outside, and my rear was hanging out the door. 2. I was holding Guppy. He is like holding a squirming sack of potatoes. 3. She was being an idiot.

Let me see if I can describe this idiotic behavior adequately. She has one small blond kid, probably 4 years old with her. She's stopped in the middle of the hall, leaning over, telling this kid "Honey, you can't be sad that mommy is leaving. Mommy has to leave. Mommy has to work. Mommy is sad she's leaving. But, mommy will be back. Mommy says don't cry. Mommy won't leave you. Mommy loves you. Mommy kiss you now." This goes on at least 3 minutes, which is FOREVER when you are holding a small infant who is squirming.

And the kicker? This kid was TRYING TO GET AWAY FROM HER!!!!!!!! He just wanted to go play. He wasn't sad. He wasn't crying. Until she stirred him into a frenzy with her third person nutso rant.

I was so impatient. This was the stupidest example of parenting that I have seen lately. Making your child upset, because you are too insecure in your Mommy-ness to let the kid go play at daycare. Reminding the kid that you're leaving, and he better be sad, darnit, because YOU'RE actually the only one in the room who is important. How selfish of this woman.

I thought about nudging her, to knock her down in the hall. She was very unstable (both physically and apparently mentally.) But, I wouldn't do that. But I could think it (like an odd dream-sequence). OK, that sounds incredibly mean of me. And would definitely not be an example I would want to set for my child.

Note to self - do not induce mental illness in your children where there need not be. Let Guppy go play and have fun without me. He loves daycare, and he will probably love school. He will be fine. Kissing your child goodbye is one thing. Inciting a crying riot is ridiculous.

I hope and pray I'm never one of "those moms."

Ten things I don't think you could have told me about being a mom.

There's a lot of books and magazines and blogs out there that are supposed to help you get ready for being a mom. They pretty much tell you to "expect the unexpected," but here's some general guidelines. Here are ten things no magazine or article could have told me about being a mom.

1. When Guppy was first breastfeeding and drinking from a bottle, I thought "Why do people keep giving me all these bibs? I mean, they're cute, but he doesn't really get that messy." Then, Guppy started eating. Still, not significantly messy. Then, as time wore on, Guppy would easily go through one, if not two bibs per meal. And I would often grab one to wipe my hands on. And he would have Cheerios stuck all over his body, and peas, and bananas, and no bib can keep the food from going up his sleeves. I sure do a lot of laundry now.

2. Sleep is weird. I don't feel like I will ever sleep again. Guppy is in a different room, but I still hear all his sneezes and pants. If he sleeps through the night, then I wake up and worry. If he sleeps in, I can't. I wait for him to wake up. And, just when I thought he was sleeping great, he started teething. Teething is terrible.

3. I could watch this kid all day. He is so stinking cute. I know all moms are supposed to think their babies are cute, but I think Guppy has a special edge. I hear it's his eyelashes.

4. Spit-up doesn't just happen after a bottle. It seems to be a completely random and chance event. Who knew?

5. Sometimes, after a long day, when I haven't seen him, I just LONG for him. I get a weird feeling in my gut where I just miss him so much. Even if he's with my mom or at home, I can't wait to get him.

6. I'm a little bit momma-bear-ish. In my head, this parenting thing should be rational and able to be planned out. But when someone is holding him too long, or they say something about his "stork-bite," I want to snatch him away. HE'S MINE, DARNIT.

7. I just want to be alone with him. I like to talk to him, but when other people are around, I feel gay about our conversations. So, I wait until we're alone, then I talk to him. It seems like everyone talks to him all the time, so I like our alone time so I can make him special, like my son.

8. I better watch my language. I just know he's going to pay me back for swearing by saying something terrible as his first word. And I try so hard to watch it.

9. Baby lotion and shampoo are the best smells EVER. And the way Guppy smells after a bath, while I'm rocking him to sleep, is the happiest smell ever and I want to cry just typing it. Actually, I want to go get him out of his crib where he is sleeping, and cuddle.

10. I have had some great pets. Some awesome dogs, and a really funny cat. But this kid takes the cake. I like him, no love him, more than anything ever. I can't picture my life without him.

Who let the dogs out??? Guppy and Licorice have matching sweaters.
